Short-beaked Echidna, Cradle Mtn, Tasmania
Canon 7DmkII, 100-400, iso500, 1/1250 f/7.1

This youngster was foraging by the road not far from the wombat I posted earlier.  It pretty much never lifted up its head as it probed for ants.  In Tasmania, the echidna have more fur and fewer or less prominent spines than those in other places.

A first for me, so I appreciate the background information. Great capture of this unique (and cute) little critter. Are those quills on its back? Lovely image!

I love these little ant eaters, such fascinating creatures that lay eggs and then hatch them in their pouch - and adorable that their babies are called 'puggles' how sweet is that!  :D

They're referred to as spines, but I'm not entirely sure what is the difference between a spine and a quill!

It took me a while to figure this one out- then I found the head-what a great critter! Thanks for the wonderful education and fun shot.
