Female Polar Bear, Svalbard
Canon 7DmkII, 500mm + 1.4x, iso800, 1/1000, f/11 This skinny bear showed evidence she had recently lost cubs. She was sleeping some distance away and we parked the boat in the ice and waited. It wasn't long before she got up and came right up to the ship, standing up and looking in each port hole as she passed and went on her way. We all hoped she would get a meal soon, there were seals around, and she clearly needed it. Fortunately we didn't see other bears this thin, most were in pretty good shape. Cindy Marple
