This was a young female we found very early after leaving camp, around 6.30am and even then the light was strong. She was on the move, we thought on a hunt, until a small cub was sighted some meters behind, perhaps around 3-4 months old. It may have been that she was just moving the cub to a new spot, although we hoped it was to a kill, but soon both disappeared into thick bush and we did not wish to stress the cub out, so we left them to it.

Nice scene in the chest-high grass. What is the reason for the slanted eyes on the female, bright sunlight perhaps? Like the cub in the background.

Thanks Ron.

'What is the reason for the slanted eyes on the female, bright sunlight perhaps?'

Spot on Ron, animals react to bright like just like us as you know, so they squint, but also with the strong light the blacks will be emphasised even more, providing greater contrast in the features.

Nicely done Steve, I love the way she seems to morph from the sun bleached grass itself with the soft colours. Well worth a click to see the larger view!

I like shots like this with the mum in focus and the cub behind out of focus. Gives a nice interplay between the 2.
