Ron, I have no idea what he tried to achieve, maybe it’s his toothbrush. He did this for a few minutes and then disappeared.

My first thought was that it was rubbing its teeth on the stump.

Excellent detail in the skin and tree, and nice view of those not-nice fangs. Many people don't know that hippos are pretty nasty critters - certainly not the cute little stuffed-toy version.
