I bumped into a friend while shooting birds who told me his wife had spotted a roosting red bat in a sumac tree. He gave me directions and I was able to locate it. It was high noon and the sun was bright. Thank god for digital! I was able to try numerous combinations of ambient and flash till I got one I liked.

10D, 600IS, 1.4X and ext tube between the converter and lens in order to focus close enough. 1/200, f7.1, ISO 200, with the flash at -1.

Jim
Thanks for your contribution here again.. Looks like you nailed the right combination of flash and ambient and other then some of the shadows from the leaves it would be hard to know the time of day this photo was made.. Cool little critters bats, and this is a neat shot with the little mitts tucked in over the eyes. Thanks again for your post..

This is really cool Jim. I've seen Horay bats around here but never a Red bat. I really like his little tucked in position and how furry he looks. My only nit would be the oof leave that just overlaps his back slightly.

Very cool shot! I think this is the first non-captive bat shot I've seen.

Great shot Jim. He looks so cute all cuddles up under the leaves. Nice job

Nice shot Jim. I have never seen a red bat. I love the eyes being covered like he is trying to keep the midday sun out...or maybe the fill flash from the photographer! Great job on the exposure too.

I have only seen one image I think of a red bat, and it was nowhere near as good as this one!
Love the comp and the colors are excellent.
The only thing I would like to see, and it still is not a nit really, would be a ever so slight selective sharpening applied to the fur to make it pop just a wee bit more.

I just looked at it again, and I must say that the color of the bat is truly beautiful! 8)

Digital can be so handy sometimes! I like the "mitts over the eyes" as Dennis said and the nice diagonal line of the "perch".

Really cool. Not an easy exposure I'm sure and you did very well.
