Terry's great "Bedded Buck" image, posted a week or so ago, reminded me of this one. I photographed the bull elk in Yellowstone during the rut a few years ago. He was very busy and active protecting his harem, and just decided to take a break. I really liked the golden tones in the natural grasses/habitat.  Please click on image to view it full size.  Thank you.

How remarkable. a well seen shot. my take being from what I have seen of the Red Deer here in the UK is these stags need to lie up and rest after a heavy session of defending their territory and mating rights. Probably, much the same... as good as it gets...

Well done Ron and thank you for mentioning my shot. I love the fact that
his eye is very pronounced-showing his alertness and the fact he can be up in a
mere second.

Beautiful colour tones and textures in this one Ron, the golds and delicate grass stems make a lovely setting for this resting warrior. Its interesting that even as he rests, his senses are still alert for whatever develops in his territory with ears, nose and eyes all attuned! I am drawn to that wonderful bright eye as it catches the light, and as you say, clicking on the image brings everything into sharp view - all the better to appreciate this fine image. A beauty!

Just gorgeous, Ron. The grasses really do it for me to make the picture so warm and colorful. His expression also says a lot- resting but alert. Beautifully composed!
