When asked what he most wanted to see, our guide in the Southern Pantanal replied Maned Wolf, as he'd only had one previous night-time sighting.  Still early in the morning, driving the farm roads, our driver spotted this one coming across the field toward us.  My  heart was pounding as we watched and photographed as it continued directly toward us, ultimately coming too close for my 500mm lens.  It crossed the road behind us and disappeared in to the forest.
I wish the setting was more attractive, but given how rarely this animal is seen, I'll take the fallow field.  Talking to the farm owner later, he said they'd been seeing the wolf somewhat regularly, and were planning to allow the land to go back to a natural state for the benefit of the wolf!
