I visited one of the larger Mexican Free-tailed Bat roosts in Texas recently.  10 to 12 million bats roost there and exit the cave to feed each evening, it's quite a sight.  I took images from several different vantage points but my favorites were backlit images against this dark hillside, that way the under wing of the bats would show through.

No wonder why this is your favorite shot Nate, the way the light shows in the traslucid wings and all that action made this an amazing shot!

Its a must to click on this one Nate, then you get the full impact of the light on this swarm!   Almost like a swarm of Locusts.

Beautiful light on the wings, and was there an amazing chorus of sound from them too?

I can only imagine Nate, I've only been close to a few bats at a time. :)

Love it! What a great documentation of this behavior. The backlight was a great choice here.
