"Mommy, how do you do that?"

Not the greatest technically, mid-afternoon sun and backlit at that, slightly overexposed and softer than I would like. (Did I do anything right except have a camera handy? ;) ) But when I saw the motif, this was the shot that immediately came to mind. After all, how often do you get to see 18 feet of drool blowing in the wind? It was there for just a second when the mother dropped her head and the wind picked up simultaneously; don't think the vehicle had even stopped before I took this shot.

D60, 100-400 at 320, 1/320 at f5.6, ISO 200, cropped about 20% from top.

All technical problems aside-this is a great capture of a fleeting moment. Way to be prepared for anything.

Good post, Rich.

Actually, I think the image could benefit from some tricky Photoshop work. Mostly in localized contrast curves. The photo warrants the time, as it captures a wonderful moment. I just love the juvenile giraffe in the background.

Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwww

I think a curves adjustment could solve most of the technical issues.

Great capture Rich. Just goes to prove you should be ready for anything in the bush.

My wife hates it when I do this. This is the first time I've seen this in a photo. Great catch.

Rich, thanks for the laugh! This drool definitely wins on two counts: it's both the longest and has the most graceful curves that I've ever seen in a stream of drool. That mother is really teaching her kid lousy manners, and she should know better than that.
