Cheetah.

Maasai Mara, Kenya

This week sure has been a good excuse for posting some of my favorite SPOTTED big cat pictures. This was a young cheetah that the drivers said was away from her mother for the first time. She cried for her for a long time and at several points barely heard an answering cry. We stayed with this cheetah the better part of the morning and saw what was probably her first solo kill.

I wish I had used fill flash on the cheetahs as but back then, I was just starting to use fill. Now it would be on my camera so it was ready all the time. I guess I will have to go back and try again.

Sweet shot Cheryl. Just enough room for the tail, perfect DOF and I like the different around the back view, with the head turn.. Excellent job. I'm ready to go back too... Thanks for another terrific post here..

I like that over the shoulder look and DOF. Great looking image. As you mentioned, I wonder if a little FF would have added some sparkle to the eyes.

I really like this pose. Hope to make it to Africa someday...just these darn underwater photo equipment purchases keep getting in the way!

Hey Cheryl,

the over shoulder pose is great, and you managed to capture a rare low perspective here, which is great too. I disagree with Dennis about the room for the tail. I think you could definitely use some more room here. Also, I think the image looks ever so slightly washed out .. particularly the b/g. It may just be a preference of mine for a slightly darker shot, but I think you could use at least 1/3 less EV here. I think taking the midpoint in curves and dragging it down just a hair really makes this sing.

I love the matching tones of the b/g to the cat.

Cheers

Carl

Hey Cheryl

I like the "pose" you have here - this is a great image.

I have yet to see a cheetah - Kenya is next on my Africa list. You have a wonderful story to go along with a wonderful image!

I have never seen so many cheetah and leopard posts in one week. Ever. And this one just adds to the great collection here. Great shot, Cheryl.
