This image at 400mm and taken in jpeg ended up a little soft out of the camera. I spent a bunch of time in photoshop last year working on the image to bring out the eyes a bit more. Recent sharpening routine improvements have ended up making this a pretty nice image.

Handheld Nikon D1, 80-400 VR @ 400mm, ISO 200, Program mode, 1/160 @ F6.7. Cropped slightly top and bottom and made 5:4 from both sides.

Excellent shot Tony. I'm developing some serious big cat envy here!

Very nice portrait Tony. Good that you captured some light in his eyes as they frequently appear as black holes (see my post for an example of this!). Thanks for sharing.

Very nice Tony. I love his expression and the eye detail. Can I ask about the new sharpening routine? I have been trying several different methods including some techniques mentioned here at NSN as well as several edge sharpening actions but I am always willing to learn something new! Thanks. :)

I'm still photoshop handicapped. I got the new Fred Miranda plug-in called Intellisharpen. I've been using his actions for a while so going to the plug-in at some point made sense.
