This image was taken in Yellowstone NP. My hope/intent in this photograph was to show a calf in the protection of its mother (tail draped over the calf) without really showing the Mom.

Equipment: F5, 600/f4 AFS, 1.4x

Your comments, suggestions and reactions to this shot are gratefully sought and appreciated.

Regards, Simon

I find this extremely well done. The late low light is wonderful and I like the framing of the calf, including elements of mom but tight in on the calf. In light of recent discussions regarding trying new things, moving beyond what we may have already seen in the work of others, I find this very creative.. The entire image has a very nice relaxed and protected "feel" to it.. Thanks for posting this here...

Simon,

I think you have succeeded in your attempt to portray this as a protection shot. This is a very well done and intimate portrait of a calf who still needs his mother. Lighting and exposure are good as well. A winner all around.

Simon, you had wonderful light and such a cute subject. But your tight composition and unusual framing are what really make this one. Very nice.

Gorgeous light that draws the eye to exactly where you want it -- on the baby's face. Nice tight framing, I think it accomplishes nicely what you state as your goal.

Lighting is great and the tail does exactly what you want it to do. Well done.
