In the broadest terms the only way this image fits this weeks theme is as a precursor to youth :-). The rut in Yellowstone will soon be at full swing (right now the bulls are moving into the normal locations). In this image, taken last fall, the bull is flehmening (scenting females).

Equipment: F5, 600/f4 AFS, 1.4x

Your comments, suggestion, and reactions are gratefully sought and appreciated.

Wow this is exceptionally nice Simon. I like the pose and flehmen, the grass that surrounds and isolates him in the image, the catchlight, and the composition. I guess I just like everything about this.

This is certainly an exceptional photo, it really has it all. Terrific fall colors, excellent subject and perfect composition looking across the frame. On top of all this there is action, and the photo is very sharp. Was this taken at RMNP- I really enjoyed a week there last October. Hats off to you Simon for an excellent image and thanks for posting here at NatureScapes..

Excellent image Simon. This is just classic bugling bull elk. this would look great hanging on the hall in a really large size!

Hey Simon

nice light, and a classic bull pose .. excellent detail throughout .. I'm not a big fan of the grass background for elk myself, and I think the composition would be a bit stronger if he had a bit more for his feet. I'm being picky here, I know. A very strong image regardless.

Cheers

Carl

Thanks to all who took time to provide feedback, it is truly appreciated.

Dennis, the image was taken last fall (beginning of October) in Yellowstone.
