Fallow Deer (Dama dama) – Knole Park, Kent, UK

Canon EOS10D, 600mm/f4, Gitzo 1548 + Wimberley Head.
Evaluative metering (EV= 0), Av-mode, f6.3, 1/200, iso 400.

Caught this fawn pronking. This is something I’ve been trying to capture for some time.

Pronking is a form of behaviour common to some deer and antelopes in which they jump into the air with their legs straight and rigid – they kind of bounce. It is probably used, both to give the animal a better view of a potential predator, and to indicate to a predator that it has been seen and the individual is fit and therefore not worth chasing. Young animals also seem to do it for fun (another anthropocentric interpretation).

Nice catch Phil. Certainly not easy. I have tried many times to catch an impala doing this, but they're always too quick or too far away :( Well done

Wonderfully done & great timing. I've tried to capture this behavior as well but unsuccessfully. Got to have lots of room at the top before he starts. (I've cut a head or two. ) Composition works well to show the behavior.
