I shot these rare wild Grevy’s Zebras at Samburu National Reserve in Kenya last summer.

Almost extinct in the wild, the Grevy's zebras sport stripes which are more numerous and narrow than those of the plains zebra and do not extend to the belly. In all zebra species, the stripes on the forequarters form a triangular pattern; Grevy's have a similar pattern on the hindquarters, while others have a slanted or horizontal pattern.

EOS 1D, EF 300/2.8 IS (thanks E.J.!), 1/1000 @ F8, ISO 250

Greg,

Very nice environmental shot of the Grevy's. I really like the comp with both animals coming in from the left. My only wish would have been for at least one to have its head raised. Thank you for also including the information that differentiates this species from the rest.

It's the sharpest lens I've ever owned. I really like this one a lot. I hope you post more of your Africa stuff here in FFM.

I like this just fine as is. Exactly as I would expect to see them undisturbed in their habitat. Very nice.

Wonderful work boss, I like the composition with the balance of the zebras with the trees. Thanks for the lesson on lines as well..

Nice post, Greg. I have been dying to get up to Samburu to see the Grevy's. They will seem so different after seeing countless plains zebra. I would have liked a warmer light in this photo. I like the symmetry of the two together.

Very nice shot of a rare animal. I like the symmetry between them and that you included the environment.

Love the stripes here, and the symmetry. Your usual wonderful composition. To be quite picky, I might like them turned a bit more toward you, but that's jealousy as much as anything! Most amusing thing about the photo is how their defense, the stripes, is what makes them really pop in the photo.
