Image
Big Meadows area, Shenandoah National Park

Canon 10D, 100-300 4.5-5.6, ISO 400, f5.6, 1/125
Cloned a twig sticking in on the left edge and a small OOF hightligt near top. USM.

I'm working to improve the overall composition of my wildlife shots, so any comments/suggestions are welcome. I wish the OOF green blade of grass was not near the left edge, and I think the bent stalk of grass running through the fawns neck is distracting. My question is, with this type of image, should I have kept the head in the upper center of the frame, or would it have been better to move it more toward the right edge? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I think the composition you have here is excellent. The blade of grass is OK although it could easily enough be removed if it prevents you from hanging this on a wall :)

Chris, I happen to like the composition that you have chosen. I don't think you should feel like there are any set rules that you should follow for your compositions. Take the shot with different compositions and pick the one you like the best. You are obviously doing something right. This is a great shot.

Hi Chris, I really like this shot. I think I would like to see it without the weed on the left but it is a great shot. Carol W

Congratulations Chris, great light and subject. As noted above, tack sharp and the grass is where you find them...thanks for the post

Great photo! for me the blades of grass have to be there. It is part of the Nature story. Sometimes photographers do to much cloning or removing of natural material, Sometimes they will really help a image. Such as the grass does here.

Sweet imge of bambi. The placement looks fine to me. Cloning out the blade of grass would be very easy to do.

Nice color contrast between the deer and the grass, good looking fawn, nice sharpness in the fawn (and that one blade of grass :) ). Slightly open mouth while chewing a blade of grass is a big bonus - and really offsets that one sharp blade in front. Looks good to me. Composition works by me as it stands.

I too like the composition as is. This is a wonderful portrait. Great light, great subject, tack sharp. Looks like a wall hanger to me. Thanks for sharing.

The alert, curious look in the eyes and the bit of grass in the mouth make this one really great :D .

Awwww. Love this!! Very innocent and fresh. The tall grass is so neat, too!
