This handsome gentleman became a willing participant in Chas recent STL Black Bear Workshop in Minnesota. While hunkering down to obtain eye level shots one had to periodically glance over one's shoulder to watch for the amazingly quiet approach of the stars of the workshop, the black bears. Mr Woody was captured using Canon Eos 10D, Canon 400/2.8 on Gitzo tripod (set low) and Wimberly head. ISO 400, 1/80 at f 5.6. No flash. Cropped 20% from the bottom, slightly from the top. Any and all comments and redos welcome.

You caught him in an interesting position, here. There are a couple of hotspots that you might want to deal with if you are going to print this. If you are shooting RAW and using Capure One DSLR to process the images it is very simple to reduce the exposure value a little. For printing, I would also crop it to a square format, loosing a little from the top.

Best wishes

Hi Joe---I really like the woodchuck (marmot) and see them here in SD often along the river. They are big dandelion eaters and will clean out a big patch in an afternoon and eventually the whole back yard! The sharpening on this guy looks good to me; with your permission, I did adjust the brightness downward in curves to offset the slight overexposure. I hope that lets us compare on screen to get the idea of the two overall exposure effects.

Good catch! He looks like he can't quite believe he's having his picture taken!

I like how this is different from most other woodchuck shots. The pose on the log is a very nice touch. And to me, it looks like the PS work does a nice job of toning down the hotspots.

I don't usually repost on my own images but I would like to say thank you to all of you out there who have gone out of their way to offer assistance and help me to improve my skills both when holding the camera to my eye and when sitting down in front of the screen to work on the image. I have experienced everything from helpful comments and reposts to personal contacts and even telephone calls and I'd like to say thanks to a very generous group of photographers out there.

A nice pose and good balance in the frame You might consider a small burn on some of the hot spots.
