OMG Dean. We have travelled the same path. (LOl. My first camera was a Praktika LTL. Second was the Canon AE-1. AV-1 Followed. A-1, then F1n then Eos 1.).

Remarkable image. great light and love the comp and drama in the clouds...

I believe the holes were made woodpeckers/flickers.

I'm really enjoying your old barn/building series...great stuff.
These structures may not last long.....it is wonderful to document them while they still stand.
I know a few that I have photographed are no longer....

I spent a lot of time in the 1970's in western US states seeking out these old structures. Many are no longer standing or have completely disappeared. One wonders what happened that led to their original abandonment. History, I guess. Being cooped up due to Covid has allowed me the time and incentive to digitize them from their original transparencies. Fun.
