Childhood memories.

The day I visited it was raining, but when I arrived the rain stopped, the sun came out and bathed the old limestone structures with a warm glow.  The house and gateway arch were built in 1794, and it was an amazing place to spend a happy childhood.

Under the statue is an inscription in Latin which roughly translates as 'While I breathe, I hope'.

The folks with all the money lived in a grand house at the other end of this estate.  My father was employed by them, which enabled us to live in this magical setting and roam the vast parkland surrounded by wildlife.  :)   To this present day, I don't settle easily into town life!

Thank you for sharing Carol, such a lovely story from the heart :). The rain must have stopped for you to capture this drippled bathed archway, nothing like visiting old haunts to churn those delightful memories from years gone by.

Thanks for posting this view of the entrance, Carol. It is lovely to see with the home in the background. Such a wonderful place to grow up.  The lighting is absolutely gorgeous.

Wow- what a place! Love the quote- and the light is gorgeous on this. How wonderful that you were able to live there-you must have so many cherished memories. What wildlife did you see there?

Thanks for sharing this-both the photo and you story. Look forward to more....:)

Thank you, Sinuhe.  What a thoughtful and brilliant comment!  :)   Daphne DM would be proud of you.

''Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me. There was a padlock and a chain upon the gate. I called in my dream to the lodge-keeper, and had no answer, and peering closer through the rusted spokes of the gate I saw that the lodge was uninhabited.’'

Amazing!........ there used to be a large padlock and chain holding the gates shut, but as you can see, on this day the gate was open when I arrived.

Thank you, Cindy.  As always, its a pleasure to share images, memories, thoughts..... with you.  :)

With some 400 acres inside the park, and hundreds more outside the park boundary - with lots of woodland, lakes and marsh areas, just some of the wildlife:

Deer, Red Fox, Badger, Stoat, Weasel, Rabbit, Hare, Hedgehog, Field Mouse, Harvest Mouse, Vole,

Heron, Ducks - Mallard, Gadwall, Teal, Wigeon. Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Gt. Crested Grebe,  Pheasant, Owls - Barn Owl, Tawny Owl.  Sparrow Hawk, Kestrel, Marsh Harrier, Green Woodpecker, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Wood Pigeon, Turtle Dove, Ring Neck Dove - and a large variety of smaller birds too many to list!

- If only I had been into photography then!!  :D
