Greg and Heather, White Sands National Monument, New Mexico

This was taken last year at White Sands and I decided to post it rather that a humiliating shot of E.J., Cheryl or Tony…..

Humiliating to who, you or me? If you would like to post an image of me you are more than welcome to. :)

Pretty shadows but I think you're missing some detail in them.

I like it!

Can anyone think of a way to take a shot like this without having one of the shadows looking like it's holding a camera?

I am looking forward to going back to Bosque this year but all these posts from White Sands are really getting the wheels turning. I can't wait to get to those dunes with a couple lenses and some Velvia 100F. I's like a playground for photographers in there. This shot captures the feeling of playing around with a lens and seeing things not normally seen in the landscape. Well done.

I remember this one - good eye. To the question of how to avoid the holding camera look - use a monopod, keep the camera at chest level, make sure the monopod leg shadow is covered by a human leg shadow and take the shot without looking through the viewfinder. Or you could just hand hold it from waist level.

This was fun, and I like how the image turned out. White Sands is like a photographer's playground, just don't lose your bearings too close to sunset! We wandered pretty far to get beyond the foot prints and had to find our way back after sunset - luckily still a bit light out.

A compass only works if you know what direction the car is, and a GPS only works if you know the location of the car... But from your warning, I'll try to remember to bring both if I ever make down thataway!

I'm curious: How long does it take for footprints to disappear down there?

I don't know for sure but I suspect a strong wind might do it. While we were there we could walk far enough back to get to areas with no foot prints evident. Near the roads tracks were everywhere and people were even sledding.

The bottom of my boots have a unique pattern and that's how we were able to distinguish our tracks from everyone elses and finally find our way back to the car.
