So, what are the editors looking for? Any guidelines anywhere?

John,

Per your suggestion, here is a link to to the thread "Can't compute," where your questions were answered. In summary, images posted in the image Galleries are all eligible for consideration. Moderators of the individual Galleries can nominate images, and final selections are made by Greg Downing.

A couple thoughts to ponder, John:

If you are after an "editor's distinction" acknowledgement, you may need to travel to exotic locations and then hope for exceptional conditions. You might be fortunate enough to live near such places, or be able to afford the cost of travel. If so, get out, shoot, post and then wait for accolades.

On the other hand, you may be a photographer who enjoys exploring the nuance of local scenes where the subtle changes in light and season reveal the soul and character of a place. If so, great! Get out, shoot, and then post where you will (not necessarily here). Be humble, expect little, and then appreciate any feedback as a connection with like-minded folks.

Tom,

Take a look at the picks sometime...No exotic location needed nor is that what we are looking for...just good images.

So I strongly disagree with the first paragraph above and strongly agree with the second....
