Hey everyone! As many of you may have noticed, NSN has made it to the big leagues in a new way over the past few weeks -- we're now regularly getting numerous "spam" posts in our forums every week; sometimes every day. The moderators and admins will clean up this junk as soon as we come across it, but a few of you have been helping out by sending email, PM's and so on to alert us of posts that need to be taken care of. Thanks for doing that.

With the upgraded forum software we put in place starting May 1, there is now a built-in mechanism that you can use to report any post when you see it, if you feel it needs our attention. Each post in the forums has a small tool-bar on the upper right part. It looks something like this:
Image
(Some of the icons are available only to moderators or admins, so your tool-bar may look a bit different.) I have circled the inverted triangle icon with the "!" character in it. If you click on this icon, you can report the post. All of these reports are logged in a central place where the admin team can view them. Reported posts also show up in the forum highlighted in pink. This way everybody will know a report has already been filed and there is no need to report the post again.

So in the future, if anyone sees a spam message or any other kind of post that is objectionable or contrary to our site guidelines, feel free to report it and we will deal with it shortly. Thanks for everyone's help in keeping the NSN forums at the highest signal-to-noise ratio. :)

Royce,

Should moderators delete after they've been reported or leave them for editors to take action, i.e. cancel that account?

Moderators & regional mods should feel free to delete individual spam posts in their forums, if they like. But it's important to either record the user ID or leave at least one of the spammer's posts in place so the admin team can ban the spammer ID. If all the messages are deleted and we don't know the user ID, we can't find the account to lock it out. And I do so enjoy finishing off the job.

I see my forum's post is now gone. But, I will just continue to monitor and report the post and leave in place in pink. I let you 'big dogs' bark.

I killed it already and banned the spammer ID, before seeing your question here. :)

Yeah, I'm one of those that has alerted the admins about spam and am glad we have a 'feature' to flag stuff as spam automatically. It is so sad that in this day and age spam still acounts for over 90% of all email trafic. I have Hotmail and Google mail accounts in addition to my company account and get spam on all of them with the Hotmail being easily 10 times worse than either gmail or my company account.

One disturbing group of spam emails was being sent to my company account with the sender being me. That is, the spammers had managed to look like it was me and was sending the cr*p to me as if I were doing it. I alerted my IT guy and at first he thought there was nothing short of blocking myself to stop it but after about 2 weeks it has gone away.

I hate spam...

They are spoofing the email headers to make it seem that it's coming from yourself. If you look at them, it should become clear that it's not being sent from your company's mail server.

Worse than the ones sent to you with your own address as sender, is the fact that they're also sending to other people with your address as sender. Most mail servers are smart enough to notice that the tracking information on the email doesn't match the address, but not all are. I get a couple of "undeliverable" responses to spams sent using my address every week. These are the ones sent by the less intelligent servers--the smarter ones wouldn't respond to me.

Unfortunately, nothing any of us can do about it.

Is there a new way to report spam now? I don't see the icon anymore with the new format and have been reporting them by PM or email.

There is a red exclamation mark in the toolbar at the top right of each post, at least it should be appearing there for all users. Clicking that button will let you file a report about a suspect post.

Thanks Royce. I had searched for it, but hadn't found it as per above posts before inquiring. Now I see an exclamation point in gray, rather than red, at the bottom of the posts. I guess my computer is color blind!
