Is there an advantage to a static IP address vs. a Dynamic IP address? I recently upgraded the modem and noticed for the router a Static or Dynamic option.

Not for usual home user. You don't get to choose static IP option unless you pay extra for it.
Option for static or dynamic IP was always available in routers.
