Easy web building software

I'm thinking of building a new website after no web presence for several years. My old site was built using iWeb on Mac, but Apple stopped supporting the App in their wisdom, so I closed the site down.
Does anyone have suggestions for something as simple as iWeb to make galleries, do articles and drag and drop images onto the pages?
I looked at Squarespace at one point, and they told me I couldn't do what I wanted to do: ie. Do blog-type entries where I alternate text and photos. It seems simple, but I think they are more template-driven.
WordPress didn't seem any better.

Thank you
Scott

I'm not sure what you may be referring too when you say: "blog-type entries where I alternate text and photos." That is some of the most basic features any type of website can do. Squarespace, or Wordpress based is all you need. They both do that and way way more.

Maybe you could provide a link to a type of sight you are referring to for an example. If you know of a website that has a layout similar to what you would want to do, just see what that site is built with.

What I wanted to do seemed very basic to me. I’d like to write a paragraph, show an image with text below it, then continue with another paragraph and so on. It seemed easy to me, and was in iWeb, but when I talked to square space for example, they said I couldn’t do it with them.
I’m looking at “Sparkle” as a web building program right now and it looks like it might work.

I think Wordpress is made for exactly the type of usage you described. I don't use it though so I can't say if it's easy or not but tons of people use it so it can't be that hard.

Wordpress.org is not as easy as many people will say it is. Over the last couple years there have been numerous changes with gutenberg, blocks, themes, plug-ins, security, hosting, etc. Changes continue. If you plan to try it yourself, I wouldn't start there.  If you want to try it yourself, and you want a simple drag and drop, I recommend Name Hero. https://www.namehero.com/website-builder

If you want to hire someone with experience that you can trust, I recommend you contact Rich Brooks with Take Flyte. https://www.takeflyte.com/blog/why-wordpress       https://www.takeflyte.com/

One of the better wordpress gallery plug-ins you should check out:  https://wordpress.org/plugins/foogallery/

At the risk of sounding argumentative, which I am not trying to be, WordPress and Square Space will do what you need. There is absolutely no question with that. What you describe is literally what they do. With the dozens of options out there, those are the only two I would recommend or even consider.

There are also dozens if not hundreds of videos on YouTube that walk you step by step in setting up both. You could literally have a very basic website ready to add your content to in a day.

I just googled how to build a wordpress website and randomly picked this as an example. Anyway, good luck, have fun, and I won't beat this horse anymore.

I appreciate the input, and I will check out your link. It's likely my lack of digging deep enough into Squarespace/WordPress that is causing my confusion. Probably my conversation with the Squarespace person was simply a lack of clarity explaining what I wanted.
I plan on hundreds of pages, so the simpler the better. Thank you for the input, I'm not committed to anything at this point.

Hi,

I use WordPress and it's pretty easy, but knowing a little HTML gives you the ability to do more. All three of my sites are done with WordPress,  but check out my blog, TheCreativesCorner.com to see if it's what you’re looking for.

Have Fun,
Jeff
