I will be likely giving NIK Collection 4 a try. I use NIK Collection 3 with DXO PL4. DXO-PL4 was just upgraded (for free) to be compatible with NIK $ and they state that the upgrade allows XMP files to accompany RAW files. I will be testing this out to see just what this means for Nikon NEF files.

For Photoshop users, see new functions called Meta-presets explained in the video around 13:20 minutes.

For Lightroom users see new features called Smart Copy and Paste explained around 14 or 15 minute mark.

According to the requirements listed on the DxO site, the upgrade evidentally is not compatible with PS CS6. anymore. There are some comments at dpreview reporting installation failures or crashes by trying to open Viveza. So non- subscribers of Adobe are out, meaning they cannot use NIK 4 as a PS plugin, at least.
