I know somewhere on this forum this topic has been discussed but I couldn't find it with the advanced search, so please forgive me as I'm arriving late to the party. I just got my R5 yesterday and had no idea that it shot .CR3 files or that Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw wouldn't open it. That's all I've been using to edit my photos for a decade and I don't want to mess with DPP or Lightroom so I am starting to think about just sending the camera back to B&H and just stick with my 7D II as long as I can. Does anyone have any idea if or when Photoshop will allow you to open up .CR3 files? Thanks.

The latest version of DPP4 works well as a RAW converter. Simply click on the image and use the "transfer to photoshop" command.

Also I think if you update Adobe Camera Raw to version 12.4 it will also open .CR3 files

thanks Joel. Maybe I won't send the camera back now.

One other thing, I have ACR version 13.2 in my Adobe Creative Cloud but I don't know how to make a .CR3 open up in ACR when I double click on the picture like it used to with .CR2 files. I'm obviously not a tech savvy guy. I'm using a MacBook Pro for everything. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

If you are up to date on LR and PS you shouldn't have a problem.  One thing to take into account is the files from the R5 are twice as big as they were on a 7D2 so they aren't as quickly processed.  I ditiched my Mac Book Pro when I moved to Sony and started working with much bigger files.  The older and some of the more recent versions of the  MBP just don't have the processing power to handle the larger files in an expeditious manner.

All is well now that my white knight, Bob Steele, came to my rescue with this old blog post from maybe 10 years ago that showed me how to set up my photoshop to open up .CR3 files with ACR.

The work flow is exactly the same and I see no color problems at all like Glenn Bartley and Jan Wegner were alluding to, so I'm happy as can be with moving ahead with the R5 now. I was ready to send it back earlier today. What a relief! No fiddling with Canon DPP or Lightroom or anything

Adobe does support the R5 natively:
