System drive backup

Having a new computer system built by Puget and wondering what people are using to keep their system drive backed up automatically to a second internal hard drive.  I've used Macrium to make copies and have them but never got into doing it on a regular basis and would like to on the new build.  Thanks in advance.  Jim

Jim, I use SyncBack Free and set it to backup every night.

Whatever you end up using make sure you have a backup to an external drive.
Last year the PSU on my computer failed and burnt out every attached drive including the DVD burner.
For Mac users I've heard of a power spike resetting the passwords on all attached drives rendering them only useful as doorstops.

I use synch back SE for my backups. I do mine by hand as I do not leave my desktop on all the time. I backup D to E, both internal. And I back up D to two external hard drives.

Off topic but I went to your new website-in-progress. Wow man you are still so underrated; excellent images there. (Are the swift foxes throwing around a prairie dog in some of them? None of those in Alaska, so dont know.) Your stuff is always impressive, Jim. Showing up the young guys still.

You will love your Puget System.  I bought one in 2010 and then upgraded last year.  Love it.  I use GoodSync to back up my images just about every time I edit.  I have been using Acronis to make an entire back up of my "C" drive.  My C drive has the OS, all software, etc.  Images and other data are on other drives.  I strongly suggest that your back ups be on external drives.  I would also suggest that your back up be backed up to yet another drive or drives and stored off site.

Well thank you Tom for the kind words.  I have long admired your Alaska work going back way too many years!!

I do have to get back to loading up images on my new site.  The Swift Fox are tossing around Prairie dogs but when the mother pulled that weasel out and they started playing with that I almost died!  So much fun.

Thanks again,  Jim

Thanks Ed, for images I have backups upon backups of my images.  For System I usually start out well and have a clone early on but don't keep up with it.  Want to do better this time.  I've built my own computers for years but this time I'm having them do it.  When people like E.J. etc are using and trusting them it makes it a no brainer for me.  jim

For system drive backup I have a scheduled clone once a week using Macrium Reflect.

I have been using Macrium Reflect to do a system backup when I first get a system loaded and ready to go.  Figuring that way I had a nice fresh install ready to go if I had a problem.  I used the Free Version. Can you schedule backups with the free version or worth purchasing a license?  Thanks.

I don't use it for backups but I think so. I schedule the clones using the free version so I would assume you can also schedule backups.

How do you avoid the risk of backing up a corrupt version of your system drive if it is automated?

I have always when building a system, made a clean clone of it once most of the programs etc were installed and then put it away for just that purpose.

I've been thinking of just adding a regular backup to the latest version for cases where it was just a drive failure.  My new system is configured with M.2 drives and I'm not sure of the failure rate.  This one I'm having built but the last one I built exactly 3 years ago using an  M.2 drive is still running fine.  Fingers crossed.  Jim

I don't claim to have the best ideas in fact I know I'm not doing what is best and why I'm looking into this.  Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Quick question EJ. What would you recommend for 'online' backup? I've got local backup of all the drives on to external units and have used various online apps like Mozy, MyPCBackup, Backblaze to do automatic backups of key data off site. However, these systems are extremely slow and ungainly. Restoring is also an issue, some require the entire disk to be downloaded and so on.

Thanks,

Pradeep

I don't use the online backup services so I don't really have one that I would endorse.
