In the past, to back up photos, I have used a portable hard drive formatted with NTFS and Paragon driver with a Mac.  Having just bought a new portable hard drive, is there any significant benefit (or drawback) to formatting the new drive with HFS+, if I expect to continue using a Mac?  Or should I use exFAT?  I am trying to understand if any of these options are significantly better than the other.  Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

As long as you never need to attach it to a non-Mac you should be OK.

And used on a Mac, a hard drive formatted in HFS+ is significantly faster than one formatted in exFat.
