firmware update Sony a6000

I tried to update the firmware on my a6000 from ver 3.20 to 3.21. Downloaded the upgrade with no problem. Not so fortunate when it came to installing the update. Everything went fine until the last step. At that point I think my USB connection between computer and camera came loose before the on-screen instructions said to remove the cable. The installation ceased and I have tried numerous times with no luck - keep getting a message saying "The preparation for the update is not ready. Verify the following points"
1. Verify that the camera and computer are connected with a USB cable.
2. If [Resets camera] is displayed on camera's screen, press [OK] and verify that camera's screen has disappeared.
3. When verified press the [Next] button.
When I do as instructed the computer pauses for a short time and the same screen shows up on the computer.
I call Sony customer service. All they could offer was to e-mail me instructions about how to try fixing the problem. I tried the suggestions made in their e-mail several times and the same thing as described above.
The camera won't turn off and on and the small red light on the bottom of the camera stays on even when the camera is turned off. The next step seems to be to send the camera into Sony.
I would think that there is some way I can fix the problem without having to send the camera into Sony repairs. Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks.
