Is this likely to be much faster than a usb 3 reader?

Yes if and only if you are using UHS2 cards, otherwise it's the same because it's the card that is the limiter. I get about 250MB/s transfer with this reader using a fast UHS2 card compared to about 85MB/s using the fastest available UHS1 cards. the easiest way to tell if you have UHS 2 cards besides trying to read the small print on the card is to look on the back of the card, if it has two rows of contacts it is UHS 2, if it has just the one row that come to the edge of the card then it is a UHS 1 card.

Not sure. I'm using CF cards mainly. Can you use a UHS2 card in any camera or must the camera be specifically designed for it.

The UHS2 referred to SD cards.

The answer is yes to your question, any camera that has an SD slot.
