Price goes WAY up if you opt for big SSD (2 or 4TB). Base prices are same as last year.

OK, even with a 1TB SSD and the top processor w/ 32TB choice it's $3900!

$2400 is the lowest spec 15" - 2.2GHz, 16GB RAM and just 256GB storage.  For $3900 you get 2.9GHz, 32GB, 1TB and upgraded graphics.  It's the minimum system I would even consider - $3900.

I was responding to Mike who seemed to say that a high spec machine was $2300.  There is no machine at $2300.  The low end starts at $2400.

Out of curiosity, how much would a similarly priced Windows machine cost? Apple has made a few decisions the past few years that are pushing me away from them. I'm actually contemplating a windows machine for my next laptop upgrade.

Where are Apple's MacBook Pros made? China? Or somewhere else? I'm wondering if this is the early onset of tariff impacts.
Cheers,
Doug

It's hard to find a computer that can be configured the same but I was able to configure an Alienware computer almost identical to the Apple one that I configured for $3900.  Similar processor, 32GB of RAM (slightly faster RAM on the Alienware), and 1TB M.2 class storage.  The main difference is that it gets to 1TB via 2 512 M.2 drives instead of a single 1TB in the Apple but functionally it should be the same.  Graphics are superior on the Alienware to the top card offered on the Apple and it has 2GB more video memory.  Price is $3050 so about $850 less.

Note that the Alienware is user upgradeable to 64GB and the second M.2 can be changed out for a larger one.

Interesting. I will look at the alternatives once I'm ready to upgrade. A more powerful machine for less money, sounds like a winning combination. I'll look it up. Hopefully, it has an SD card slot as well.

Before ponying up for the big bucks of the, on paper, pretty awesome i9 version, check out these videos.  Clearly the Apple chassis is not able to keep the processor running at spec speed due to thermal issues.  It's crazy fast if you keep the computer in a freezer, at room temp, not so much:

Or just get the best specced i7 version...
I think a true fix would require a complete redesign of the chassis and/or waiting for the next generation of processor.

With full speed TB3, why would you opt to buy the SSD upgrade? Am I missing something? Of course they had to release this a few months after I bought mine :(

Not everybody wants to carry around external drives ;)

I have a 500G drive in my current MacBook Pro. I thought this was more than enough, but now I am left with just 50G, rest is taken up with stuff that I am loathe to delete or transfer to my Mac Pro. Granted, external space is cheap and I have plenty of that in my desktop system, but increasingly, I find myself using the laptop for most things. Certainly for travel, there is no other option. I now use the big desktop only for large projects where I have tons of images to process, and of course printing.

So while it may be quite adequate to have a 250G drive to run an OS and relevant apps, I think if you use the laptop as a backup unit, a larger HD is quite useful. In the field, I now have larger and larger cards to offload and having enough space on the laptop along with a separate external HD means I can have yet another copy of my images saved up.

From what I am reading, the i7 version with a large HD and lots of RAM would be quite a bit faster than my current 2013 Mac Pro
