I use that regularly and on purpose. On a trip, I tend to collect the images on the internal drive of my laptop. Those images might be imported and worked while I'm traveling. When I return from the trip, I move the folders the images are located in to an external drive using finder which is the quickest way to move the images. When I open up Lightroom, those images are not found. I then tell Lightroom to find the folder that the images are in and poof, all the images are now available for use in Lightroom again.
