Lightroom/Canon DPP

I've been thinking about upgrading to Photoshop CC and the plan that is offered also comes with Lightroom.  I've dabbled with Lightroom in the past a bit but have always just used the Canon DPP program to make minor adjustments and export as a TIFF to work on in Photoshop.

As I've been learning more about Luminosity masks over the past few months it seems that many of the tutorials include the use of Lightroom.  So I downloaded the trial of Lightroom and have been testing it over the last few days.

What I'm finding is that when I compare the TIFF file generated by Lightroom to the one I generate from Canon DPP the colors are very different.  I do NOT care for the Lightroom file at all.  I'm not sure if there is a setting I am missing or if is just the difference in which the 2 programs handle the file.

I like some of the added flexibility that Lightroom provides but I can't see to get a TIFF file to look similar in color when I process it in Lightroom, no matter what adjustments I try to make.  Also I don't want really want to spend additional time trying to get back to the color I can already get out of DPP almost automatically.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or experiences with this.  Thanks, Aaron.

The reason for the differences in color is that Canon DPP uses whatever picture profile you have set in the camera as a starting point, LR does not - it uses whatever default settings you have your LR set-up for. Either can be made to look similar to the other by working all of the different controls. Learning all the capabilities of both is key to getting the best results out of either. Both are very capable of getting you the exact look you are after. Probably the best place to start is with some LR tutorials which there are an incredible amount online.

I have downloaded the Canon picture styles and inserted them into Lightroom as personal presets. I use them a lot, especially "Standard" and "Landscape". This often becomes my starting point for additional adjustments.

If you are happy with DPP and exporting to Lightroom, I can't see a need to change anything, you're not tied down to making a change when you upgrade cameras and I can't see anything in CC which would make me want to upgrade from CS6.

I use luminosity masks a lot and have downloaded the Tony Kuyper mask actions. Now with one click you have a curves adjustment layer with your choice of luminosity mask added and you just tweak the curve to your liking - very simple and no need for tutorials or Lightroom. The actions come as a panel with choice of curves, levels and channels and multiple choices of mask "strengths". I generally use L3, MT1 and D3. Definitely worth a try. There's a free version and various options for paid versions.

Hi Ed how did you download the Canon picture styles into Lightroom?
