I just downloaded the firmware update, double clicked on the .exe file which produced a folder with the .bin file in it. There is a link on the Download Center page under "Updating the Camera Firmware" that is a pdf for detailed instructions. Is that what you mean? The firmware download button is below the "End User Agreement".

As Alan stated, you first extract the BIN file.
The download is an EXE file - when you run that EXE file it creates a new folder in your Downoads folder.  Inside that folder is the BIN file.  That file is copied to a card's root directory and then inserted into the camera.

From Nikon's instructions:
-Create a folder on the computer hard disk and name it as desired.
-Download F-D810-V112W.exe to the folder created in Step 1.
-Run F-D810-V112W.exe to extract the following file to a folder named “D810Update”:
• D810_0112.bin (the camera firmware)
-Using a card slot or card reader, copy “D810_0112.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
-Insert the memory card into the camera slot currently selected as the primary slot and turn the camera on.
-Select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
-Once the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
-Confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.

In most cases you can ignore the first two steps as Windows defaults to the Downloads folder unless you have specifically decided to DL to a different folder.

Try the DL again from here:

I just did this, ran the exe file and got a D810Update folder that had the D810_0112.bin file in it as its only file.

I did it on Win 7. It's likely you have non viewable files hidden so youa re only getting files that have file type associations for viewing. Go into your file preferences and turn on all files:
In Windows Explorer - Tools > Folder Options > View and then check Show Hidden Files and Folders
