If you don't mind making your new 2016 MacBook Pro a bit thicker but bringing back all of the port functionality of older models without an array of dongles, the innovators at OWC have come up with a solution - a new base to the MBP:
https://www.owcdigital.com/DEC/

It even preserves all of the USB-C ports but adds back the USB-3 ports, SD card reader and ethernet port.

As a bonus, this thing allows you to add 4TB of flash storage too.  My only wish is that they had put a battery in there too to double the battery life.

Thanks for this link. A great solution, especially the flash storage. This will make me upgrade to the new pro. Any idea on price?

They haven't announced price or weight yet.

It looks like it is as big as the MBP itself?

With that thickness an additional battery in the base would've been nice! I guess that is a V2.0 upgrade...

IMO this is a non starter.....I might as well cary two laptops with the size of this thing. I can get a USB3 dongle that is smaller than my cell phone, and one or two SSD drives that are half the size of my cell phone and basically accomplish the same thing. What am I missing here?

The device is certainly not for everyone. The biggest plus to the item is the two additional disks that can be added to the machine. That along with a number of additional ports. Most of those ports existed on previous Macbook Pro model.

I think it was really designed to be a home hub rather than a travel accessory. For traveling, I think the one I linked below is a better choice. Unfortunately it is not currently available though it should be available again through Indigogo in April and eventually directly from Hyperdrive.

Agree with you Tony - that is more like what I am thinking of. FWIW I am still using my 2014 MBP simply because it has the ports I want - wish it were faster but I'll probably pull the trigger soon and have to figure out the solution to the port issue. Steve Jobs would have never approved that...

I think Tim Cook may have heard the complaints about Apple's latest moves from the professional community - here's hoping:
