[Split from "Desktop Specs  - This may be a little off topic but..."]
...I've stuck with win7.  With win10 in the wings, is it time to move forward with operating systems or stay with the tried and true?

I would think the decision to change to an Operating System has to occur AFTER the said Operating System has been released. I've gotten a bit conservative when moving to a new OS since many things can go wrong that you didn't anticipate. My timing is now anywhere from 2 weeks to a month for a quick move or up to two years or so when I think there will be issues.

On the Apple side, my desktop is still running 10.8.5 when 10.10 is available. I recently admitted that I really wanted a new piece of software and I upgraded my photo laptop to 10.9 only to discover that another piece of software didn't work properly anymore and I'd likely have to go to a subscription for the upgrade or try to get something slightly older but newer than what I was running. The annoying part is for what I was doing, the older software was all I needed.

If you think you want to switch early to Win10, as in with in a month after it is released, and you don't have a spare computer to try it with, I would suggest after the release googling various software that you are using and seeing if there is an issue or not. Like "Photoshop CS6 on win10" or "Problems with Photoshop CS6 on Win10", etc. If one of your main pieces of software is having a problem early, then don't upgrade until there is a solution unless you really want to upgrade that too or use something else.

I would echo Tony's advice. Unless there is a compelling reason to up-grade, I would wait until all the glitches have been ironed out, and that may be upto 12 months after the initial release. I learned my lesson about being an early adopter a few years ago and I will not now buy any technology until version x.1 is released.

Windows 7 Pro is so ironed out.  Why take chances?

If you have Win 8.1, you are praying for 10.

it would seem we are probably more than a year away from considering moving away from 7. I like to wait for service pack 1 before moving to a new system. If we skip 8 that means probably summer 0f 2016 before I go to a new operating system. I wonder how long Microsoft will support win 7?

Thanks EJ.  The more I think about this, I guess I'll wait to buy a new computer until we find out more about win10.  If it is truly win8 fixed then go to win10 in 2016 if not quickly by a new machine with win7.  no guarantee but it looks like Microsoft might be supporting win7 longer than they want just like they did xp.
