Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Flora and Macro Gallery, week ending 23rd March, 2012!Badamia exclamationis ( Brown Awl )
Image
ISO640 1/300s F/9 , Fill-flashed , Handheld.

The upperside is brown with greyish green scaling at the wing bases. The forewings have elongate whitish streaks in the cell. The pale greyish underside has a glazed appearance. The large abdomen is characterized by black and yellow banding. The wings are rather elongate, giving the appearance of a sleek stealth fighter.

This butterfly is a fast flyer and is seldom encountered. The adult visits flowers of trees, and sometimes drinks from damp ground. This crepuscular butterfly flies actively early in the morning and late in the evening, whereas it rests on the underside of a leaf during the daytime.
