I was both sad and excited to read about this work- I first read about it in a magazine called"Northern Woodlands". The heading is titled: "The Quest to Save the Fastest-Declining Landbird in North America".
I just posted a picture of this bird in the ":"Birds" Gallery. It is the Evening Grosbeak. That's the bad news. The good news is that an organization called Finch Network, is researching the decline and banding various EVGRs, as well as tracking them .They are also studying other finches in decline. Amazing work!!
Here is their web site:

A wealth of information!
They also have a Facebook page:

And Stokes has a new guide book out about finches.

As photographers, I feel we need to support this kind of work, not the least because some of our favorite subjects may soon disappear. It's only the tip of the iceberg too. So many animals, places ...and even people, are threatened with major changes in the environment.
One thing I do that you can do to, is report your bird findings to "ebird"- a worldwide record of bird sightings.

Photos are sought after and welcome, and an archive exists in the Macualay Library. Some of my photos and recordings have been used to teach "Merlin"- the phone app that identifies bird song in the field.

Why not report your findings as well as taking great photos of them!
