Dumbness, and the prevailing need to self promote with people these days, are a pretty toxic and fatal combination.  The only people that don't get it are those that go beyond those simple rules and then pay the price in full.

One thing I have learned in life is the repeated ability of people to be stupid.  Not a particularly PC comment, but it is a truth.  (let's throw in taking a selfie and falling off a cliff.   Doh!   .... Bison photo.... Getting gored by Red Deer...  Attacked by Lion in the Kruger NP...  Doh)

Stupid is as stupid does.

On a "policing note", one must note that neither the Bear or the lady in her Gym clothes had face masks.  Wrong ones!

My teacher who was teaching nuclear physics was a funny guy. Ones he said: Today I try to explain to you the meaning of a term that I don't fully understand: Entropy.
I might describe like this: it is the measurement of human stupidity. It is huge and ever growing.

Cipolla's 2nd law of human stupidity: The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

And sometimes the danger comes from unexpected directions:

Watch out for them beavers!

And giraffes! I believe that this is where the series “Wild at Heart” was filmed.

She isn't alone.  See the link below where a momma bear chases after tourists in Yellowstone.  Photographers around too.  In her case, she was likely lulled into getting closer because the bear was not reacting in an aggressive manner despite her closeness until she crossed that invisible line.  Looks like she was reaching out with one hand to 'fake' feed the bear thinking this will allow her to get even closer. Education.  I think she learned her lesson.  I bet there are many risk takers among the population.  Look at those free climbers who scale steep rock faces without any safety harness where one mistake could mean the end. A few have fallen to their deaths recently.  Dumb, stupid or trained and calculated risk?  In the girls case, don’t think she knew the risks rather than being dumb.

In 1997, I was giving a workshop for a small group for the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers And Photographers(RMOWP) in Yellowstone. There were two instances in about three days that we witnessed regarding dumb people. The first had several people trying to photograph a cow elk by a large pond. She was cornered against the pond and chased a couple of people, but no one was injured. Then we were near Roosevelt Lodge when we noticed a group of people gathered around something. It was a black bear cub and a little girl of about three or four years old was about ten feet from it with no mama bear in sight. We tried to warn people, but they just thought it was cute. We soon departed and hoped nobody would get injured. Two of the workshop participants were employees of a fish and game department and were in total disbelief that anyone could be so careless with their children. A mama bear with cubs is one of the most dangerous animals to run into in the wild, but as stated above, “too much Disney”! There are strict rules regarding bears in Yellowstone and the rangers often move people back, even if the bears are more than a hundred yards away, if circumstances dictate that an escape from a charging bear would be improbable. Rules are there for a reason, but the danger isn’t always apparent, just like the Corona Virus.

Hi,

I deal with people from all over the world on a daily basis, and stupid is the new black. I can't believe how many incredibly stupid people there are out there. I don't know how they remember to breath or eat.

Have Fun,
Jeff

My daughter was a park ranger for a few years at Yosemite. She never ceased to be astounded at the stupidity of some visitors regarding wildlife there. An elk impaled a child at Yosemite a few years ago while the mother observed this lethal action . Many trekkers do not follow regulations even when warned that Yosemite does not provide rescue missions for those not following protocols....and she had to answer phone calls from parents inquiring about their lost kids that had failed to follow protocols.  She wish them well as there was nothing the park could do for them.  Oh well..

And when everything goes horrible wrong, the "adults" will wonder what happened.

Well, it is a very poor selfie since we see little of the bear.  She should go back and do a retake....
