I'm planning my first visit to Big Bend NP March of 2020. From the small amount of research I have done at present I am assuming the beginning of March is a good time to visit.

Tent camping for 5 nights. Any suggestions or advice from others who have visited and camped at Big Bend would be appreciated. Besides some of the must see places I always like the lesser visited areas of NP's. I guess I will have to pick a campsite and stick with it so any info on a few camp locations that may be better than others would be appreciated as well.

Camping sites at BBNP in March will be extremely hard to get. The reasons are
1. The weather will be very nice.
2. March is spring break month.
Because of this I would suggest looking into the possibility of reserving a spot. I don’t know whether or not this is possible but I’m sure you could find out at BBNP’s website.

Brad,

I recommend trying to get a campsite in Chisos Basin; this is the most central location in the park.  The distances in the park are quite long, so you may also want to consider breaking up your camping locations to focus on different portions of the park.  There is also an option for backcountry camping; some of these areas are drive in sites; although they can not be reserved in advance.  There are some nice spots along the road to Pine Canyon.

There is a lodge at Chisos Basin. That is where I stayed the last tie I was in Big bend about 25 years ago. My favorite hiking trail was The Lost Mine Trail. There are other trails that leave from that area too that are very good.

Make sure your vehicle is full of gas and that you have plenty of water with you at all times. I am not sure if cell phones work there yet. Things are still pretty primitive in Big bend.

In the general area, try and visit Big Bend Area State Park, Marfa, Ft. Davis and Alpine. In Ft. Davis the Indian Lodge has just been reopened after renovations.

One of my favorite drives in all of Texas is The River Road, Texas FM 170. It is very scenic and runs along the Rio Grande River.

Here are some other links that might be of interest to you. If you get lucky you might hit the height of the wildflower blooms. 2019 was one of the best years ever.
