At least there are still some of the woodland caribou remaining in Canada. But the numbers are getting smaller in the mountain region (and some other regions, too).

I consider myself lucky to have seen woodland caribou three times--all in Jasper NP. The second sighting was a small herd (6-8 animals, I think), the third was a pair eating salt on the road--and I got some great pictures because they were right there, and not moving much. But my first sighting was probably the most memorable--a lone animal was being chased by a wolf across the dry lakebed of Medicine Lake. (The caribou got away--the wolf was just a youngster. Its pack had taken down a moose further up the lake.)
