My wife and I are planning a summer trip to Minnesota, just because we have never been, and would like any information on the best timing for seeing and photographing Loons and babies.  Please recommend an airport that is close.  Our timetable is flexible and we will travel to other areas of the state.  Both of us enjoy photographing birds, flowers, botanical gardens, etc.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You might want to visit Itasca State Park which includes the Headwaters of the Mississippi River.  Delta Airlines flies into the regional airport in Bemidji, MN which is less that an hour's drive from the park.  Many of the lakes in northern Minnesota will have nesting loons.  Bemidji would be central to much of northern Minnesota.  You could also fly into Duluth, MN, drive the "North Shore" of Lake Superior and access much of the "Arrowhead" region of Minnesota which includes the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area.

Loons arrive in Minnesota in April, sometimes before the ice on the lakes is completely out.  They would nest and rear their young throughout the summer, leaving in October at which time their beautiful breeding plumage has disappeared.
