The EU is fighting a losing cause because there is no such thing as a free lunch. Their model of state run TV that subscribers pay is a good example. Advertising in the US supports over the air TV (as crummy as it is). The big boys of internet use advertising to prop up the free platforms and it is wildly successful business model and the EU would have a state run model that skips advertising but drains the pocket books of tax payers. Would you pay for Facebook or Twitter? Good I didn't think so. Somehow these platforms need to generate funds to stay in business. If you don't like them spying on you, you don't have to sign up. Government intervention should only be as a last resort. If they are abusing their knowledge of individuals (which to varying degrees, they all do), make them acknowledge this (which they are now doing) and use the government to set boundaries so that there is a level playing field. As far as over regulations, this is a major sore point with the UK...the German and French model used in the EU Parliament with hundreds of pages of rule and regulations for little items is a recipe for stifling creativity.

As a side note, I am having a meeting with Sen. Merkley tomorrow and hope to find out about the status of the reform of the Endangered Species Act moving forward in the Senate.
