This new phone is interesting in that it has three rear facing cameras, including a B&W camera. I am wondering if the B&W camera may be IR capable with just a filter. I can’t determine from this article if it is capable of stand alone capture.

Also interesting is that it is capable of 102,000 ISO.

Here are some pretty convincing images of the quality of the new phone cameras:

Especially night shots.

I personally would rather see texture with noise than a noise-free image with no visible texture where it should be.

Lucky that Canadians don't have to worry about giving away secrets.  :D

This whole fear of spying sounds pretty ridiculous and political! There has been much written about that in recent weeks. It has nothing to do with the strides made in camera phones, which is what this post is about.

Re: noise and texture, that was mentioned in the last linked article. It is nothing that can’t be tweaked by the manufacturer in processing the JPEG image, but the quality of nighttime shots with a long exposure can’t be denied. Keep in mind that these are not RAW images like the S8, S9, Note8 and some others are capable of capturing without special apps. Those have plenty of potential that the P20pro doesn’t appear to be capable of. Keep in mind, also, that the image of the man walking in front of the red sculpture was a four second exposure, yet he is not blurred due to movement. I think that is super impressive! The claim is that it can do that without a tripod! Can your DSLR, mirrorless, etc. camera do that?

I, personally would rather not have the ugly noise in the sky and prefer the P20pro images taken at night. The detail is especially impressive in the buildings.
