For just bird variety (breeding or migrants) in general and no target species, any specific location suggestions within 40 miles of the city?  My research indicates Mitchell Lake Audubon, the botanical garden, Friedrich Wildeness Park are possibly good. South Texas on the border is too far.

I’m not sure of the exact distance, but.Guadalupe River S.P. In Spring Branch, a little ways North, has breeding Golden-cheeked Warblers. A beautiful park, very crowded on weekends (based on my ONE experience there).

A little farther afield..............about 100 miles is South Llano River State Park. I've been to Texas literally dozens of times and this is my absolute favorite park in the entire state for birds. Worth going a little further. Oh, and did I mention you can get both Black-capped Vireo and Golden-cheeked Warbler there?

If you are in the area in early April do not forget about wildflowers in bloom. That is around the peak time and will give you an additional option for photos.
