Im looking for suggestions for a new tripod. I currently have a Gitzo I purchased in 1987 and really need something lighter. I am shooting a Canon EOS 7D with a Canon 500 4.5 L lens. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Any of the modern Gitzo 3 or 4 series Carbon Fiber tripods would be perfect and they are infinitely better than Gitzos of even just a few years ago.

I used a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod for ten years and sold it for slightly less than I paid for. Why, because the price went up substantially in ten years.
Now I use an Induro carbon fiber tripod. Is it as good as the Gitzo?
No it is not, but it does the job and the price is less than half of the price of a similar Gitzo and just as light as the new Gitzo..
