If you needed to replace a 100-400 Canon or a 24-105 on the south island, how hard would that be?

Very easily, most likely it could be done with overnight courier from a number of sources.

Thanks. Normally I carry a 28-300 as a spare but weight is getting to be an issue.

Overnight used to be the case in the South Island, but since the Kaikoura earthquake all trucking has to come down the centre on a road never designed for it, and it is regularly closed for up to a day due to snow or a truck rolling. Two days is usually fine.
The discounters are mainly in the North Island, but both Dunedin and Christchurch would have those lenses in stock in most camera stores at reasonable prices.
In Christchurch I'd check out Photo and Video (https://www.photo.co.nz/)
I see there's a camera shop in Queenstown as well. They could fly in any lens you wanted overnight.
Cheers,
David

got it. Thanks. I've rarely had a lens "issue" but it has happened three times in my life about once every 10 years lately.
