Not only is DEET bad for Plastics, it works as a very
effective paint remover on just about any type of paint.
If you can figure out a way to keep gnats and flying
insects away from your lens you better patent it
because you'll be able to make $1,000,000 off it.

Try a Thermacell.....they work wonders on skeeters!

A drop of honey on the lens hood. That will keep them away from the optics, where you don't want them.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.

If they are not leaving a mess on your lens, it is probably not necessary to keep them away (unless you are shooting extreme close-ups).
