Hi folks.  I'm new here to the site, and am hoping starting off
with a question like this is not too rude.   But here goes:  I'll be in
Melbourne Australia in mid Sept and would be much obliged if
anyone could offer some tips/pointers/links re. good birding
photography strategies that time of year.  I would consider renting
a car if there are some good sites in the surrounding areas.

.. Matt (in Canada)

Welcome to the site. I edited your title to differentiate Melbourne, Australia from Melbourne, FL - we have quite a few Australian members so hopefully you will get an answer.

It will be spring time in mid September here in Melbourne so a great time for birding. There are several places with very different species and habitats close to Melbourne.

I would suggest considering a day tour with the bird company linked to below as they cover all the great spots in the one day. Then you could hire a car based on what you learned/liked and revisit as you like. I am sure the guide could offer you more information. There are wetlands, forests in high county just above Melbourne and coastal forests plus inland forests all within the scope of a day trip.

I do stress that I have no affiliation with the company just they offer a great oportunity for visitors to gain quick and accurate information. If you scroll to the bottom of the link you will see a calandar with booking opening that should help you.

I live in a rural area about 100km or 70 odd miles from Melbourne and there is a direct public train ride to my rural city so you would be welcome to meet me for the day to take you to our local spots. Just PM me.

When will you arrive?
Weather has been pretty awful the last few weeks, hopefully it'll get better soon!

What would you like to see/photograph? There's heaps of great spots around...
