I'm shooting with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and I'd like to use the exposure bracketing (AEB) feature with my exposure mode set to Manual.  What I'd like to do is set a "base" exposure at a given aperture and shutter speed, i.e., f/4 & 1/1000 sec, and have the exposure bracketed by adjusting the shutter speed in one stop increments.  When I set up to shoot with AEB in Manual exposure mode, the camera brackets around my base exposure by changing the aperture in one stop increments.  I can't find a custom function that specifies to adjust exposure in AEB by changing shutter speed vice aperture.  Any hints?  Can this be done?  Thanks.

It is explained on page 114 of the Manual.
I have never used it but after reading the manual (Page 114) it appears to me that you will have to use aperture priority
instead of full manual and the camera will change the shutter speed as per your setting (-1; 0; +1)
Will try it tomorrow when there is light outside.

It will definitely only change shutter speed in Av mode. I don't have any Canon bodies lying around but there was a time where I bracketed in manual mode using shutter speed but it's been 9 years since i last owned a Canon body so I can't remember how to do it. I don't shot Av, never have, so clearly i was able to do it somehow.

Thanks, Karl.  When shooting in Av mode, won't autoexposure determine the starting exposure? I'd like to be able to manually set the exposure around which the bracketing will occur.

Thanks,

I found it! When shooting AEB in Manual mode, the default is to bracket exposure by varying shutter speed, unless you change Custom Function IV-5 from the default value 1 to value 2. This is unintuitive, since this custom functions specifies whether you will change aperture value with the quick dial (default, 1) or the main dial (2). I had set this custom function value to 2, hence in AEB and Manual mode, the exposure is modified by varying aperture. Thank goodness to the internet and search engines!

When using AEB in Aperture Priority you can vary the exposure, from the meter determined exposure, by using the Exposure Compensation wheel to change the exposure: for example set -2/3 of a stop under exposure.  Lets assume that you set a 1 stop over/under normal exposure in the AEB setup. By setting the compensation to - 2/3 stop all exposures taken will be -2/3 of a stop from what the meter determines is the correct exposure (-1 2/3, -2/3, +1/3). It is very easy to dial in exposure compensation on the go. I've taken 1,000's of images this way with very consistent results. When doing this in Aperture Priority all exposure settings are varied by shutter speed which keeps consistent DOF across all images making them ideal for use in HDR or focus stacking.

Hi Tony,

Sorry I forgot about the whole thing. Now I took some shots with all three modes: Aperture Priority, Shutter speed priority and Manual.
Manual and Av does the same, keeps the Aperture constant and changes the shutter speed in the corresponding increments.
I chose the initial point at zero and minus and plus one on either side.
The Sutter priority mode changes the aperture and keeps the shutter constant.
In Manual mode you measure the light on your object, set the initial point  to where you think it is good (full sun maybe zero, covered maybe between plus one and two) or anywhere depends what you objective is. Then set the bracketing around the initial point.
